We've Talked About Cutting Carbon for Years. Now Scientists Are Pulling It Out of the Air.

On June 29, Canadian climate technology company Deep Sky reached an important milestone in carbon removal. More importantly, it gives us a chance to understand one of the most fascinating climate technologies you've probably never heard of.

For years, the climate conversation has focused on one goal: put less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Drive cleaner cars.
Build renewable energy.
Make homes and businesses more efficient.
All of that still matters.
But a growing group of scientists and engineers is asking a different question:
What if we could remove some of the carbon dioxide that's already in the air?
In other words, what if we could clean up some of the mess we've already made...while continuing to make less of a mess going forward?
On June 29, 2026, Canadian climate technology company Deep Sky, led by CEO Alex Petre, announced a North American first. The team successfully removed carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, permanently stored it underground, and had the entire process independently verified by a third party. According to Reuters, it's the first verified direct air capture carbon removal credit delivered in North America.
When I first read that, I had one question.
Wait...how do you pull carbon out of the air?
One thing you'll learn about me is that I'm endlessly fascinated by the people trying to create solutions. Whenever I hear about a big challenge, my next question is always: Who's working on it?
So I started digging.
As it turns out, the concept is surprisingly simple.
Imagine a giant air purifier.
Large fans pull ordinary outside air into a machine filled with specialized filters. Those filters act almost like a sponge, grabbing carbon dioxide molecules while allowing oxygen, nitrogen and the rest of the air to continue flowing through.
Once the filters become full, they're gently heated. That heat causes them to release the captured carbon dioxide, leaving scientists with a concentrated stream of carbon dioxide instead of billions of molecules scattered throughout the atmosphere.
Now they have something they can work with.
The carbon dioxide can be compressed, transported and permanently stored underground, where it remains out of the atmosphere.
That's it.
Air goes in.
Carbon dioxide stays behind.
Cleaner air comes back out.
Pretty damn cool.
To be clear, Direct Air Capture (DAC) isn't a silver bullet. Today's systems are expensive, require significant energy and remove only a tiny fraction of the carbon dioxide humans emit each year. According to the U.S. Department of Energy and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), reducing emissions remains the first priority, while carbon removal could become an important tool alongside those efforts.
But every breakthrough starts somewhere.
Remember solar?
The first solar panels were bulky, expensive and inefficient. They generated only a fraction of the electricity today's panels produce. Few people predicted how dramatically costs would fall or how quickly the technology would improve. Today, solar is one of the fastest-growing sources of electricity in the world.
But all of this is not really my favorite part of this story.
My favorite part is the people behind it.
The engineers.
The chemists.
The entrepreneurs.
The people who looked at one of the world's biggest challenges and thought:
"I wonder if we can build something that helps?"
The human mind and soul are remarkable things.
Give us a difficult problem, and someone, somewhere, starts building a solution.
